Dylan Larkin Will Return to Red Wings After Requesting Trade, But Role Has Changed
Dylan Larkin returns to the Detroit Red Wings and he released a statement, as did the organization about a future trade and his captaincy.
The Detroit Red Wings and Dylan Larkin have mutually announced that the disgruntled forward will be at training camp next week, but the team will start the season without a captain. Larkin, who requested a trade, was not moved, and he’ll be back with the club until a trade is finalized. However, he will no longer serve as the team’s on-ice leader, given his request to leave.
Larkin said in his statement:
“Over the past couple of weeks, Red Wings leadership and I have had several in-depth discussions. I’ve appreciated those candid conversations, and I will be at training camp with my teammates. When new leadership is in place, we’ll talk further about the direction of the team. We will keep those conversations private, and I will keep my focus on the season ahead and on the guys in that room.”

We look forward to seeing Dylan and the rest of his teammates at Little Caesars Arena for the start of training camp as we prepare for the upcoming season.
On Dylan Larkin’s Trade Request:
Dylan is under contract as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. Any conversations regarding his future with the Club will take place privately when a new hockey operations leader has been named. As such, we will not comment any further on this matter.
On the Captaincy of the Red Wings:
The Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season without a captain being named. Any further discussions or decisions regarding this topic will be made once new hockey operations leadership is in place.
Reactions From Fans
Once the statement was released, fans started reacting.
“That is the blandest, nothingburger of a statement I could imagine. That is seriously the best Dylan and the team could do after ALL this? Embarrassing. The secrecy is ridiculous at this point. Fans need real answers about why this is taking so long to name a GM,” wrote one follower. Another said, “OK, how about actually hiring a GM? This is operationally the worst managed franchise in the NHL.”
Some fans demanded an apology. “This just shows he doesn’t want to be here still. Give Mo the C. It’s what the fans want and it’s what they deserve. A guy who wants to be here for the long term.”
Clearly, fans aren’t thrilled that Larkin asked out and some aren’t happy he’s coming back, only to still likely want a trade.
