Does Oilers’ Sophomore Matt Savoie Have Something to Prove in 2026-27?

How important is this coming season for Matt Savoie? Does he have something to prove if he wants the big money deal?

Matt Savoie doesn’t have anything left to prove about whether he belongs in the Edmonton Oilers lineup or the NHL. He settled that debate last season with an 18-goal breakout campaign that has many believing he can be a member of the team’s top six moving forward. That belief raises a question that needs answering. Heading into 2026-27, how high does his ceiling actually go?

Savoie played all 82 games in 2025-26 and took a noticeable step forward after the Olympic break, finishing with 18 goals. That stretch run might not have been a simple hot streak. What Oiler fans saw may have been a preview of a player capable of scoring 20-plus goals consistently. The question now is whether he can carry that level of play across a full 82-game season and next season is the season he’ll have to show it.

If he doesn’t, any hope of a big contract that approaches anything resembling the big RFA deals that got handed out this summer is a long shot.

The Oilers want to give Savoie a big deal. Why? Because if they’re doing so, it’s because they’re extremely confident he’ll live up to the extension. If they didn’t want to make sure they know what they have, he’d already be signed.

It’s not that Edmonton doubts what Savoie can do. They just don’t have enough proof. Before inking him to a bridge deal or a long-term extension at a higher cap hit, the Oilers want another full season of evidence that he is what they think he is. That’s a smart, patient approach from the front office — but it also means Savoie’s next 82 games will directly shape the size of his next contract.

The ball is in his court. Or, in hockey terms, he’s got the puck on his stick.

In that sense, he does have something to prove: not that he can play in the NHL, but that his second-half surge was the new baseline and not a ceiling. If he can turn a strong finish into a strong full season, he becomes exactly the kind of player a GM takes a calculated bet on — the type whose next contract looks like a bargain almost as soon as the ink dries.
