Does It Count?: Hurricanes Forward Signs New Deal in Middle of Boozy Stanley Cup Celebration

Carolina Hurricanes sign Nic Deslauriers to a two-year extension, securing him for another $875K per season. Is it legal given the situation?

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Nic Deslauriers to a two-year contract extension. The deal was finalized in the middle of the team’s Stanley Cup celebration on Saturday, with GM Eric Tulsky pulling out the contract and saying, “Let’s take care of this right now.”

Deslauriers was one of many players who Tulsky said thanked him for the chance to play in Carolina. He was one of the team’s few pending free agents. With no desire to go anywhere and with the market unlikely to give him a variety of lucrative offers, he inked a two-year deal worth $875K per season.

“Two more F—ing years!,” yelled Deslauriers as the fans cheered on the new deal. He was elated to be staying and as Elliotte Friedman pointed out, it was great to see him rewarded. However, some of the questions from fans were, “Is it binding since he was drunk when he signed it???”

While likely meant to poke fun at the state Deslauriers was in at the time, it’s an interesting question, given it was pretty clear that Deslauriers had consumed a few beverages.

Interestingly, it’s a sizeable pay cut for Deslauriers. He was coming off a four-year deal that saw him making $1.75 million per season. Now, he’s making essentially league minimum, after playing just seven games with the Hurricanes and 24 games with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2025-26. He had just one assist in Carolina and one assist in Philly. He played in just one playoff game for the Hurricanes throughout their full postseason run.

This is a depth addition on a player who won’t be in the lineup every night.

One has to wonder if the player and the team might have to sign this one officially one more time. It’s a new one to have a contract signed in public like this, especially after a player has been celebrating all day, and it might be argued this one isn’t exactly legally binding.
