Have the Devils Soured on Defenseman Damon Severson?

Could Damon Severson be a player that shakes loose from the New Jersey Devils and might the Vancouver Canucks be interested?

While a guest on TSN1040, NHL analyst Ray Ferraro helped the hosts take a look at some possible defensemen that Vancouver Canucks might want to take a closer look at. Among the names that were mentioned: Aaron Ekblad, McKenzie Weavers, and Erik Cernak. But when the host got to the name Damon Severson, Ferraro stopped him in his tracks and said, “He’s your guy.”

He added that he believed the New Jersey Devils may have grown sour on Severson. While the defenseman can skate and he’s got a howitzer for a shot, feeling like things aren’t working out with a specific player can happen with organizations when seasons aren’t going as management might have hoped. Sometimes, in trying to figure out what went wrong, there’s a tendency to see only the “warts” or downside of certain players.

That may be what’s going on with Severson, hints Ferraro.

Sverson is a right shot, who if he becomes available, should come at a far less expensive price point than some of the other blueliners potentially available in trades. He’s got three more seasons on his current contract at $4.16 million per season and at just 26 years old, he’s a player a team can invest in versus grab as a rental.

Ferraro adds that he can defend better than he’s given credit for and if he becomes available in a ballpark the Canucks can make work, he thinks the Canucks should go for it. If they don’t Ferraro adds that if the Devils do move him, he’ll be a good get for whatever team lands him.

Severson Has Not Come Up in Trade Talks

Just because Ferraro mentioned the Devils might be a bit down on the defenseman, doesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything to idea that the team is looking to trade him. In fact, the only name that tends to come up in consistent trade talks out of New Jersey is Kyle Palmieri.

Severson is one of those guys that once you trade him and his reasonable contract, you might be wishing you had a player just like him and his reasonable contract.
