Devils Held Palmieri Out of Lineup Because of Imminent Trade

Kyle Palmieri was held out of the New Jersey Devils lineup Sunday and his agents confirm it’s due to the likelihood of a pending trade.

The New Jersey Devils are doing what a lot of teams do when they think they have a trade on the go but don’t want a player to get hurt in a game, thus risking said trade being off the table in the event of an injury. The Devils are holding the player out, just to make sure things don’t go sideways.

In this case, that player is veteran forward Kyle Palmieri and the Devils announced before Sunday’s game that he will not dress due to “precautionary reasons.” Coinciding with the announcement, Palmieri’s agency Bartlett Hockey confirmed that Palmieri was being held out “in anticipation of a trade” in the coming days.

There has been plenty of chatter that Palmieri would be on the move after negotiations on a new contract extension seemingly broke down between the two sides. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic tweeted that all parties involved were trying to hammer out deal before deciding on a trade, but things weren’t going well and all signs were pointing toward the fact that a trade was likely inevitable.

Palmieri will be heading to unrestricted free agency at the end of the year and he’s one of the more coveted forwards during this year’s trade deadline period. While he’s not had a marvelous season, he’s a consistent scorer that could be useful as part of the top six for a number of teams. The Boston Bruins and New York Islanders are rumored to be two teams that could be in the mix.

Where Will Palmieri Land?

Palmieri, 30, has 17 points in 34 games this season and has recorded at least 24 goals in each of the last five years. The forward has an eight-team no-trade clause and it will be interesting to hear which teams are not on that list and who ultimately lands him. If he moves in the next 24–48 hours, he’ll be the biggest move of the deadline thus far (no disrespect to Eric Staal intended.)

It will also be interesting to see what the asking price is. Whatever the Devils get in return could set the market for other trades to come.
