Can Moritz Seider Make an Immediate Impact in Detroit?

Detroit Red Wing prospect Moritz Seider is off to a good start with Rogle of the Swedish Hockey League. Can he jump to the NHL?

Being in Vancouver for the first round of the 2019 NHL draft was an amazing experience. Candidly, my real interest was to track several of the big WHL names that would be taken that day including Kirby Dach, Bowen Byram, Dylan Cozens and Peyton Krebs. However, it did not take long to have a surprise name called earlier than expected when Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings selected German defenseman Moritz Seider.

At the time, it seemed like Yzerman wanted to make a bit of a splash and go off the board with his first draft pick and glorious return to the Red Wings. Since then however, it looks like Mr. Yzerman made smart call after smart call as a General Manager.

Last season, Seider settled into his first North American experience quite well. At the tender age of 18 he was able to manage two goals and 20 assists in his first 49 professional games. Solid. Especially considering the drastic change of scenery for a young person.

Seider in Sweden

With a delayed AHL start date of February 5th, Seider has started his season in Europe on official loan status by Detroit. Specifically, the big German defender has landed in Ängelholm, Sweden with the Rögle BK club.

First off, the fact that he is in Sweden makes a lot sense given the teams history of franchise players from this country. Secondly, this exemplifies how willing Seider is to step outside of his comfort zone. He could have easily asked to go back to Mannheim in Germany where things are familiar and be closer to family, friends, etc.

Instead, Seider picked up yet again and took on a new challenge.

Seider does not seem to mind the change of scenery as he already has a goal and five assists in his first seven Swedish Hockey League games. Will this early success transition into the NHL and how quickly? Time will tell, but fans in Detroit should be excited about this young star in the making.
