List Of Available Defensemen for Jets Shrinking Ahead of Trade Deadline

There are a handful of defensemen on the Winnipeg Jets radar heading into the trade deadline, but one name stands out.

TSN’s Frank Seravalli noted during the on DFO Hockey Rundown podcast that while David Savard is an option for the Winnipeg Jets and player that stylistically fits with what the team might be looking for, he’s not the top target for the team ahead of this season’s NHL trade deadline. So then, who is?

Darren Dreger agreed that Savard is in the mix and that the blueliner could move up their list if other targets don’t pan out. But, Dreger and Pierre LeBrun believe GM Kevin Cheveldayoff would prefer Josh Manson out of Anaheim. While it’s not clear how likely a Manson trade will be, the Ducks are being called “sellers” and in the right deal, perhaps Manson could be moved.

Beyond that, the Jets might be looking at Nashville Predators’ Mattias Ekholm who probably isn’t available, the Dallas Stars’ Jamie Oleksiak, Buffalo Sabres’ defenseman Brandon Montour or the Chicago Blackhawks’ Nikita Zadorov. Dreger added, “I don’t think there’s any doubt that Cheveldayoff is going to add a piece, it’s just how do we rate which piece is the best fit and which piece is he willing to pony up and spend the assets?”

What Other Teams Do Will Greatly Affect the Jets

What could be interesting to see is which teams are still technically in the playoff hunt over the next few days. While the hill Dallas has to climb is steep, they aren’t officially out of it. The Blackhawks have publicly declared they’d be willing to take on salary and won’t be adding rentals, but are they willing to move Zadorov if they get themselves back in the mix?

It’s intriguing that the one player the Jets aren’t incredibly high on, seems to be the one player they could wind up landing because other options come off the table.

The one thing most of the panel of the DFO panel agreed on was that the Jets do not want to move Ville Heinola.
