Daniel Alfredsson Makes a Maple Leafs Choice That Hurt Senators

Daniel Alfredsson explains why he joined the Maple Leafs, why Ottawa fans are upset, and why he felt he couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

Daniel Alfredsson joining the Toronto Maple Leafs as an associate coach was one of those moves that instantly makes you do a double-take. And it’s not because he isn’t qualified. Alfie is absolutely qualified. It’s because of who he is and what he means. He’s basically a Senators legend, one of the faces of Ottawa’s best years, so seeing him in Maple Leafs gear just feels weird to a lot of people, even if everyone’s trying to act professional about it.

In Ottawa, the reaction makes a lot of sense. People are emotional because Alfredsson isn’t some random hire. He’s tied to the organization and to years of memories, plus the whole rivalry thing between the Sens and Leafs is still a live nerve. So yeah, he knows this is going to hurt, and he doesn’t pretend otherwise.

Alfredsson Wants to Have a Career as an NHL Head Coach

But the way he talks about it, this wasn’t him turning his back on Ottawa. It’s more like he’s saying, “This is the career step I had to take.” He keeps coming back to the idea of opportunity. In his mind, coaching isn’t like playing, where you can just wait around and hope the perfect moment shows up. Coaching jobs come and go, and you can’t always get the exact job you want at the exact time you want it.

The big point he seems to be making is that this decision is about career growth, not rivalry politics. He respects Ottawa a ton, and he gets why Senators fans will feel betrayed. He even acknowledges that this day is tough because of what the Senators and their fans have meant to him over the years. That part matters to him. He’s not trying to erase that connection.

At the same time, he’s also talking like someone who understands how coaching works. As a player, you can become comfortable and stay put for a while. As a coach, you usually have to earn your way forward. You take on roles that help you gain experience, step into bigger responsibilities as they arise, and keep proving you belong at the next level. From his perspective, this Maple Leafs opportunity is that next-level moment.

Alfredsson Knew That, Eventually, He Would Have to Leave Ottawa

People will probably wonder if this was about money or if his ties to Ottawa just cooled off. But that doesn’t really feel like what he’s saying. It sounds more like he always knew that, if he wanted to keep moving up in coaching, he might eventually have to leave Ottawa. Becoming head coach in Ottawa is still his dream, but dreams don’t come with guarantees. That, he notes, was especially true in the NHL, where teams move fast, and decisions get made quickly.

So why take the job in Toronto when the rivalry is such a big deal? Because coaching the Maple Leafs puts you on one of the biggest stages in hockey. There’s a lot of spotlight and high expectations, and they take their plan seriously—so if you’re trying to work your way up to being a head coach someday, being in that environment can really accelerate your growth and help you earn respect.

Alfredsson Understands Why Senators Fans Would Be Upset, But for Him It Was a Necessary Move

In the end, it’s still a trade-off. He understands it’s going to sting Ottawa fans in the short term, and he’s basically saying that’s the cost of coaching opportunities. Rivalry matters. Loyalty matters. But when the right opportunity shows up, sometimes you take it—because you never know when you’ll get another shot.
