Stars Scratch Anton Khudobin for Disciplinary Reasons

The Dallas Stars have scratched goaltender Anton Khudobin for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks for disciplinary reasons.

The Dallas Stars have made a statement and confirmed that goaltender Anton Khudobin will be scratched by the team on Sunday due to team discipline. The netminder did not take part in Saturday’s practice but skated afterward on his own. Whatever he did, the coach was not a fan.

Stars’ head coach Rick Bowness wouldn’t clarify if Khudobin would miss more than one game but he did say that the team and the player have been communicating regularly about this issue. Whatever it is, the netminder did something serious and the coach felt the need to hand down a swift and hefty punishment.

“We’re a family and we’ll deal with things internally,” Bowness said. “But you deal with things by communicating and making your feelings known on what is and what isn’t acceptable. I have very few rules, but you [darn] well better follow them.”

Jake Oettinger will get the start for the Stars on Sunday, and Landon Bow will be the backup when the team meets up with the Chicago Blackhawks. Oettinger has played a handful of games, going 2-0-0 with a 2.42 goals-against average and .898 save percentage. He’s started twice and been called in for one contest in relief. Bow has only two games of NHL experience, both games coming back during the the 2018-19 season.

Khudobin is 3-2-1 with a 2.51 GAA, .908 save percentage and one shutout in six games this season. The goalie signed a three-year, $10 million contract ($3.33 million average annual value) on Oct. 9. after he was amazing in last season’s playoff run and helped the Stars reach the Stanley Cup Finals.

Khudobin missed the start of training camp because of immigration issues after having surgery to fix a nerve issue in his right arm in October, then contracting COVID-19 in Russia.
