Could Rangers’ Adam Fox Be Next In Line to Ask for a Trade?

Could Adam Fox be the next big name to ask for a trade? His comments about the future of the New York Rangers suggest he’s one to watch.

The New York Rangers could be facing another major decision down the line, as speculation mounts about the future of star defenseman Adam Fox. After a disappointing season that saw the Rangers miss the playoffs and finish near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, questions about the team’s direction are starting to grow.

According to reports, including one by Bleacher Report’s Lyle Richardson, Fox—who won the Norris Trophy in 2021—could eventually consider asking out.

Richardson writes:

“Fox could be uneasy over the Rangers’ direction under general manager Chris Drury. His efforts to retool haven’t reversed the club’s fortunes thus far, as they finished last in the Eastern Conference in 2025-26. Now 28, Fox could be getting concerned about his chances of playing for the Stanley Cup.”

While there is no indication he has formally requested a trade, his noncommittal comments earlier this year raised eyebrows, particularly when discussing the organization’s direction. He said, “For me, it was just, we’re still in a unique situation. Not many people have been through a retool letter and kind of what that means…”

Fox is under contract through the 2028-29 season with a $9.5 million cap hit and holds a full no-movement clause, meaning any potential trade would be entirely in his control. At 28 years old and in his prime, he may be one of the next big names to do what Dylan Larkin, Zach Werenski, or others have done. If he lets the Rangers know that he’d like to look at other opportunities, where would Fox be open to going?

For now, this remains speculation—but if the Rangers struggle again, Fox’s situation could quickly become one to watch.
