Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl Don’t Sugarcoat Oilers’ Disappointing Season

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were very honest when assessing the Edmonton Oilers’ season after their elimination.

Just like that, the Edmonton Oilers’ quest for the Stanley Cup has already come to an end. Hopes that a strong final month of the regular season would translate into another deep postseason run quickly came and went, ending in a 5–2 Game 6 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.

It was a disappointing, frustrating, and underwhelming result for an Oilers team that is Stanley Cup or bust, led by two of the best players in the world. At the end of the day, however, Anaheim was clearly the better team, and both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl didn’t hold back about that when speaking to the media after being eliminated.

McDavid said:

“They played very fast, and we weren’t very fast—it was just the opposite… I mean, that’s been the whole year—we’ve been searching for consistency all season. Obviously, we didn’t find it here in the playoffs. Yeah, it was tough. We were an average team all year. You know, an average team with high expectations—you’re going to be disappointed. We just never found it,”

Draisaitl said:

“Yeah, for sure. Never really found what you need to find this time of year, especially to go all the way. In my opinion, just not good enough… As much as it hurts, I think they’re just a better team,”

The 29-year-old McDavid recorded six points (one goal, five assists) in six games, while Draisaitl, 30, racked up 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in the six-game series.

There will surely be plenty of buzz around McDavid’s future after the Oilers’ first-round flameout, and while it may feel premature for the superstar center to leave, we’ve heard all along that a Round 1 exit could change everything in Edmonton, and here we are.

Whether that change involves McDavid or not, buckle up for what could be a very interesting offseason in the capital of Alberta.
