Connor Hellebuyck Wasting No Time, Making Debut for the Devils

Connor Hellebuyck makes his Devils debut tonight against the Stars, with the head coach confirming he’ll start in goal. Here’s what to know.

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck isn’t dipping his toes into his NHL return. The newest member of the New Jersey Devils will be making his debut on Tuesday night as the Devils take on the Dallas Stars. Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed the news on Tuesday after the team’s morning skate.

The former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner arrives with big expectations, and the Devils are counting on him to get right in there and prove their trade to acquire him was the right move. There was some speculation that he could go, but also thoughts they might take their time getting him back physically before throwing him in. He’s been on the sidelines waiting for a trade, missing the first month of the season. However, when Hellebuyck spoke to reporters on Monday, he said that if it were up to him, he’d go in right away.

Hellebuyck took part in a couple of solid practices with his new teammates, and he said he’s ready to go. There’s no reason not to believe him, and clearly, the coach was listening.

Dallas is a tough first test. The Stars bring one of the league’s deeper rosters, so Hellebuyck should be busy from the opening faceoff. For New Jersey, tonight is a first look at what its new netminder can do in a Devils sweater. Fans will be watching closely.

Hellebuyck Ready to Play, But Is He Ready to Talk?

He’s ready to play, but is Hellebuyck ready to talk about his exit from the Winnipeg Jets? “No, I’m not ready yet. The time will be right. Let them enjoy the week and we’ll see where we go from there.” He was referring to the Heritage Classic game and the fact he’s got a lot to say, but didn’t want to overshadow how special that game was.

Now, his focus will be on playing goal in New Jersey. He wants to have a good first showing and any noise around his trade would be bad timing while he’s trying to get mentally prepared.
