Chris Pronger Shoots Down Rumor Related to Maple Leafs GM Job
Chris Pronger was asked to set the record straight on rumors of him being interviewed for the Maple Leafs GM job.
Chris Pronger is rumored to be among the candidates for the vacant GM opening with the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, don’t believe everything you hear about how far along the team and the former NHL defenseman are in their conversations.
Pronger was a guest on First Up with TSN and said, “Yeah, there are a lot of rumors out there. I’m in the media like you guys, so I’m interested to see how it all plays out, too. There were some vicious rumors I interviewed for the GM job. I did not interview for that role.”
He added that he’s not opposed to interviewing if asked, but it sounds like the Maple Leafs haven’t asked. He explained:
“I’m excited about this next chapter. As I’ve said numerous times, I’m open to having conversations and seeing what an opportunity might look like—whether it’s a fit for me or for the other side. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes the timing or the opportunity just doesn’t match what you’re looking for at that point.”
He said, “I’ve gone down that path earlier in my post-playing days, and now I’m excited to be part of the media.”
Does This Rule Out One of the Leading Candidates for the Maple Leafs GM Job?
Depending on who you asked, the answers on how serious a contender Pronger was for the general manager opening would be different. Some might say he was a frontrunner, while others would offer he wasn’t a real candidate.

Some might suggest this is just evidence that the Leafs aren’t all that far along in the process. Then again, according to Frank Seravalli, “sources say two of the ‘finalists’ advancing in the Maple Leafs GM search this week are Bruins assistant GM Evan Gold and Rangers assistant GM Ryan Martin. There is likely a third (or more?) candidate to meet with the team for a second in-person interview this week.”
It sounds like they’re narrowing things down fairly quickly.
