Chayka and Sundin Comment on Changes for Maple Leafs: “It’s Time”

The Toronto Maple Leafs introduced John Chayka and Mats Sundin to the media, both outlined the start of their future plans, roles and changes.

The Toronto Maple Leafs officially introduced John Chayka as the franchise’s 19th general manager and Mats Sundin as Senior Executive Advisor, outlining a new leadership structure built on collaboration, experience, and organizational alignment. Saying he didn’t feel the need to hire a President, MLSE CEO Keith Pelley believes this tandem will be “formidable.”

Pelley explained that the decision came after an extensive search process that included roughly 27 candidates. What stood out was not just Chayka’s vision, but the natural fit between him and Sundin. The two share a long-standing relationship dating back more than a decade, and their mutual respect became a defining factor in the hiring process. Pelley emphasized that the organization believes the duo can build a unified vision that connects ownership to the dressing room.

Chayka, returning to the NHL after several years away, acknowledged both his past successes and mistakes. He stressed that the league has evolved, particularly in areas like data, analytics, and integrated decision-making—concepts he believes are now central to building elite teams. He made it clear that credibility in Toronto won’t come from words, but from consistent actions and on-ice results.

When asked who reports to whom, Pelley called Chayka the “General Manager or Hockey Operations” and noted that Sundin works in the Hockey Operations department. That teased the idea that Chayka is the superior, but it was clear this was a tandem who would be working together and collaborating on all decisions.

Chayka noted that they have a “best idea wins” mindset that will guide decision-making. He also stressed that players must remain at the center of everything, with the organization responsible for creating an environment that allows them to perform at their highest level.

Sundin, meanwhile, spoke about the value of bringing historical perspective and experience into the front office. As a former captain and one of the most respected figures in franchise history, he sees his role as helping connect past lessons with the team’s future direction. He acknowledged the expectations that come with representing Toronto and called the fan base “the greatest in the world,” pledging to help build a winning team worthy of the city.

The Maple Leafs Stuck to the “Due Diligence” Line

Several times throughout the press conference, Chayka’s checkered past was brought up. Pelley reiterated that the organization conducted extensive due diligence on their new GM, including reviewing past controversies from his time with the Arizona Coyotes. He expressed full confidence in the hiring, describing Chayka as methodical and measured, with a clear plan for moving forward. When he was told by Steve Simmons that his research suggested this move was little more than a sham, Pelley simply said, ” ‘We must have talked to different people.’

Both Chayka and Sundin emphasized collaboration over titles, noting that their focus is singular: bringing a Stanley Cup back to Toronto.

What Changes are Coming to the Maple Leafs?

Looking ahead, Chayka acknowledged that while the current roster has high-end talent, changes will be necessary. He believes the team has untapped potential but admitted that roster adjustments are required to become a true contender. He likes the core and believes many players underachieved, but there will need to be changes.

He noted that he’s already spoken to Auston Matthews and expects to have further conversations this week. He also spoke briefly with head coach Craig Berube and will do so again this week. He wants to get an insider perspective on where the challenges were this season.

Ultimately, the message from the press conference was clear: the Maple Leafs are entering a new era built on alignment, accountability, and a commitment to doing things differently. As Chayka put it bluntly, with the weight of expectations in Toronto, “It’s time.”
