Cassidy Wins Jack Adams Award for NHL Coach of the Year

Bruce Cassidy has won the Jack Adams Award for NHL coach of the year in 2020.

There were extremely strong candidates this season, but head coach Bruce Cassidy has edged out the field and won the 2020 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year.

The Columbus Blue Jackets’ John Tortorella (3rd) and Philadelphia Flyers’ Alain Vigneault (2nd) were the other finalists.

With 44 wins and 14 losses, good for 100 points in a shortened season, Cassidy is the fourth Bruins coach to ever win the award. The team congratulated their coach on social media saying, “Bruce Cassidy, meet Jack Adams. Congratulations, Coach!”

While the Bruins left the playoffs earlier than expected, there was no doubt they were the NHL’s best team over the course of the regular season. From the start of the season to the pause of play, they were the only 100-point franchise. The team was also top three in both powerplay and penalty kill.

Cassidy Comments on Win

When presented with the award on a Zoom call, Cassidy said, “I can’t thank my wife Julie and the kids enough for all their unconditional love and support for all the ups and downs that this profession brings.” And, this season, he probably had a lot more reasons to thank his family as the pandemic really threw things for a loop and he was away from them a lot more often than he might have normally been.

Cassidy added:

“I want to thank Mr. Jacobs, Charlie, Cam and Don for allowing me to lead such a storied Original Six franchise. To the entire coaching staff, hockey operations department, the guys that are in the trenches every day, appreciate everything you do for the team.

“And obviously the players, they’re the ones that get it done on the ice. It’s been an honour and a privilege to work with them every day.”

The Rest of The Jack Adams Field

The award was voted on by members of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association before the bubble playoffs began. You can see the rest of the standings in terms of where coaches finished after the vote below:

Craig Berube (Blues), Jared Bednar (Avs), Mike Sullivan (Penguins) and Dave Tippet (Oilers) took spots four-through seven. Paul Maurice, Jon Cooper and Travis Green rounded out the top ten.
