Capitals to Terminate Brendan Leipsic’s Contract

The Washington Capitals have placed forward Brendan Leipsic on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract termination. Once complete, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

The Washington Capitals have announced on Friday that they have placed forward Brendan Leipsic on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract termination. Once complete, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

While the Capitals have determined that his actions were not worthy of maintaining employment, he might find work with another NHL club, but franchises will have to consider the PR consequences that come with bringing in someone who did what Leipsic and a few others did.

Earlier this week, private messages of a group chat that included Leipsic, Leipsic’s younger brother Jeremy, and Florida Panthers minor league forward Jack Rodewald were leaked online. All three were using misogynistic language when talking about players, their girlfriends and wives, sharing photos of their targets. It was behavior had the NHL extremely upset.

They NHL released the following:

The National Hockey League strongly condemns the misogynistic and reprehensible remarks made by players Brendan Leipsic and Jack Rodewald in a private group chat that has surfaced on social media. There is no place in our League for such statements, attitudes and behavior, no matter the forum. We will address this inexcusable conduct with the clubs and players involved.

Jeremy Leipsic was removed from the University of Manitoba hockey team and the Capitals have decided Brendan is done too.

There is mixed reaction on social media to the decision, but most are condemning Leipsic for his action. The supporters argue that his life is now ruined and that these were private messages that someone leaked online. Those condemning Leipsic don’t seem to care, only that he was disgusting enough to say these things about fellow players and their significant others.

If he does get picked up by another team, one thing is for sure, he’ll have a target on his back.
