The Montreal Canadiens signed defenseman Mike Matheson to a five-year contract extension on Friday. The deal is worth $6 million per season. Many analytics and projection accounts had him pegged at over $7 million per season on a multi-year deal. While the Canadiens have a few higher-priced tickets on the blue line, this reflects a solid number, saving the team between $1 and $1.5 million per season.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli noted, “Matheson shows his commitment to #GoHabsGo, leaving a pretty substantial amount of total dollars on the table to stay in Montréal: 5 years x $6 million.”
Matheson has 14 points in 22 games and a +13 rating, leading Montreal with 24:50 per night, 10th in the NHL. Since joining the Canadiens, he’s set career highs across the board, including 62 points last season.
He is best described as a smooth-skating blueliner who logs a lot of difficult minutes and is very involved both offensively and defensively.
Now in his fourth year with Montreal, he was acquired from Pittsburgh in 2022.
