Canadiens Re-Assign Cole Caufield to AHL Laval Rocket

The Montreal Canadiens have sent Cole Caufield down to the AHL to build some confidence after a slow start to the 2021-22 NHL season.

The Montreal Canadiens are hoping forward Cole Caufield finds his confidence in the AHL because he’s done little during the 2021-22 NHL season to warrant staying with the big club. After a rough start and only one point in 10 games, the Canadiens felt a change was needed. They’ve sent Caufield down to the Laval Rocket and recalled Michael Pezzetta.

Caufield’s slow start comes as a shock to many. He was considered a frontrunner as an early Calder Trophy favorite and this is a big reminder that development rarely happens in a straight line. There are ups and downs for any player, even ones who come in near the end of a season and tear it up in the playoffs.

He’ll go down to Laval and play 20 minutes a night, hopefully scoring frequently enough to feel good about his game and get back on track. He’s a big part of the Canadiens future and while it would be nice to have him producing now, the long-term success of the player is more important.

Pezzetta, 23, has three goals and six points in eight games with Laval in 2021-22. He has yet to appear in an NHL game and will be practicing with the Canadiens on Monday afternoon.

The Canadiens have also placed Mathieu Perreault on the injured reserve list.
