Canadian Daily Rumours: Flames, Maple Leafs, Canucks & Trade?
Flames eye a bold draft move, Maple Leafs open the roster to trade talks, and Manny Malhotra looks close in Vancouver.
In today’s (May 19) Canadian Daily Rumours roundup, I’m looking at three rumours circulating around Canadian clubs. The Flames are weighing a bold trade-up to No. 2 to grab a game‑changing scorer. The Maple Leafs have told rivals that every player is available except Auston Matthews (for now). And the Canucks seem set to promote Manny Malhotra — a Canucks lifer with a Calder Cup and a direct line to the new GM to head coach.
Flames Rumour: Calgary Hoping to Trade Up to No. 2
The Flames are choosing at No. 6, and it stings. It’s a solid spot, sure, but not the kind of headline-grabbing pick that ignites a rebuild or fills a new arena on opening night. With ownership openly wanting a competitive, excitement-first product and elite goal scoring a glaring need, Calgary’s stockpile of second‑rounders plus two firsts makes a trade-up plausible. If guys like Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg are truly top-two talents, moving up could instantly give the Flames a franchise forward who changes the power play, sells tickets and gives fans something to believe in.
Would San Jose part with No. 2? It’s unlikely but not impossible. Teams with promising centers like Macklin Celebrini might covet a top-tier defenseman (Carson Carels, Chase Reid, Keaton Verhoeff) to balance their roster, and if Toronto leans toward a Swedish pick, it could nudge McKenna into the two-slot. The price would be steep, but Calgary has the ammo and the motivation; if the front office wants a headline-getter rather than another mid-first prospect, this is the kind of bold, expensive move they should at least explore.

Maple Leafs Rumour: Everyone’s Available Except Matthews
Chris Johnston dropped fuel on the trade-rumour fire Tuesday, saying Toronto is willing to talk trades for any player on the roster. Matthews is the lone untouchable. That doesn’t mean anything’s imminent, but it sure signals the Maple Leafs are ready to shake things up if the right offer lands, and that’ll send GMs and buzz-hungry fans scrambling for scenarios.
Of course, whether keeping Matthews is even the best move comes down to him. If he wants out, all bets are off. Short of that, the team’s openness creates tons of wiggle room: tough decisions, potential splashes, and a whole lot of trade chatter to come.
Canucks Rumour: Malhotra the Front‑Runner for Vancouver Coach
Manny Malhotra checks all the boxes. He has Canucks DNA, a Calder Cup in his first year as Abbotsford head coach, and a direct working relationship with new GM Johnson. He’s coached in Vancouver before, played with the Sedins, and knows the roster and prospect pool. That continuity matters, especially after a season of ups and downs where stability is valuable.
Abbotsford’s follow-up year looked rough, but injuries, many call-ups, and roster chaos explain a lot. Malhotra’s championship pedigree and inside track make him easy to sell internally, and other clubs (hello, Maple Leafs) will be interested. So if Vancouver wants him, they should move fast.
