Can Hellebuyck Actually Force His Way Out of Winnipeg?

Hellebuyck can ask for a trade, but he can’t force Winnipeg’s hand. The Jets still hold the cards. Now what happens? That’s up in the air.

Here’s something worth clearing up in the middle of all the Hellebuyck trade chatter. He can’t actually force this to happen. The Jets have every legal right to just say no and keep him, and honestly, that’s the part getting lost in all the speculation.

Hellebuyck still has five years left on his deal at $8.5 million a year. And he carries a full no-movement clause that runs through this entire season. It doesn’t even soften into a 10-team list until 2027-28. That means Winnipeg holds all the actual power here. They can turn down every offer they don’t like and just keep him, full stop.

When Push Comes to Shove, What Can Hellebuyck Really Do?

So what can Hellebuyck really do? Honestly, not a ton. He has to approve or reject any destination since nothing happens without him waiving that no-movement clause. However, reports suggest he’s open to a decent range of teams, which helps a little. He’s also already used his biggest weapon: public pressure—going public with the request right before camp cranks up the discomfort for everyone in that organization and locker room.

Beyond that, his only real leverage move would be some kind of holdout, and that’s a genuinely risky play. He’d be looking at lost salary, real reputational damage, and possible contractual consequences. That’s exactly why most players in his situation eventually just report anyway. But let’s be real, a 34-year-old goalie’s trade value isn’t going up over the next 12 months.

Where Does This Leave the Jets and Hellebuyck?

So where does that actually leave things? The real problem for Winnipeg isn’t Hellebuyck’s leverage; it’s time. Every team that might want him already knows he’s asked out, knows camp is right around the corner, and knows Winnipeg already brought in Stuart Skinner as insurance. That kind of public urgency tends to shrink offers rather than grow them, since other GMs can sense Winnipeg’s awkward spot and negotiate accordingly.

Bottom line: Winnipeg can absolutely dig in and start the season with him anyway, disgruntled or not. Plenty of teams have gone that route with unhappy stars before. It’s not fun, and it’s definitely not a great long-term locker room situation, but it is allowed.

Hellebuyck can’t force a trade the way a guy on an expiring deal sometimes can. The Jets hold the cards here. The real question isn’t whether they can hold the line. It’s really whether holding it is actually the smart move.
