The Calgary Flames announced that they have signed free agent forward Joakim Nordstrom to a one-year, $700K contract on Monday. The signing comes just hours after Flames Brad Treliving said the team wasn’t done making moves but would be looking for depth and potentially character guys who could play on the penalty kill.

While not a flashy signing, this is an excellent bottom-six addition for league minimum. Nordstrom was a grinder for the Bruins and gave everything he had every night. His offensive production won’t be the reason he’s an effective player but he’s responsible and coachable, ensuring that he’s not making costly mistakes. He’s an ideal player for fourth line and on the penalty kill.

The 6″1′ 200-lbs center is a native of Stockholm, Sweden and registered his 400th career NHL game last season. He’s spent time with Chicago, Carolina and his last two seasons in Boston. He’s got 46 games of playoff experience on his resume.

Joe Haggerty of Boston Hockey Now notes, “He was a fearless 4th line grinder that did a good job in Boston. Getting the veteran minimum paints a picture of how rough it is for NHL middle class right now.”
