Trade Talk on Flames’ Sam Bennett Has Cooled Considerably

Sam Bennett Calgary Flames trade talk has cooled considerably. Why?

Things can change pretty quickly in a matter of one week. It wasn’t long ago that Sam Bennett was likely on his way out of Calgary. The disgruntled forward had finally communicated to the team that he wasn’t happy with his role and it was believed the Flames would try to move him. Just a handful of days later, it’s believed the Flames aren’t looking to trade the center/winger.

This doesn’t mean a trade won’t happen. It means it’s unlikely to happen any time soon. Daniel Austin of the Calgary Sun wrote about how trade chatter involving Bennett has cooled since he was slotted in a better spot where he could be more productive. Whether out of necessity or to showcase the forward, he’s started to put points on the board and he’s doing so at a time the Flames could really use the help.

Austin writes:

A week-and-a-half ago, it seemed like the Flames were going to accommodate Sam Bennett’s trade request and show him the door. Then, they plunked him on a line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan and the three seemed to find some instant chemistry.

It’s also being noted that key injuries to forwards on the Flames roster has moved trading Bennett way down the priority list. The Flames need forwards who can play and unless another forward coming back can do what he’s doing in the top six, it makes little sense to move him.

Flames Need the Depth

No, he’s not lighting it up. Bennett has two points in the last four games (both of which were goals), but the Flames aren’t exactly scoring a lot. Outside of a six-goal game against the Oilers on February 6, only Andrew Mangiapane, Johnny Gaudreau, and Matthew Tkachuk have scored in the past handful of games from the forward group.

The recent losses of Derek Ryan, Mikael Backlund and Elias Lindholm have essentially guaranteed Bennett a spot on the roster where he’ll better more likely to produce. The more he does, the less likely it is he’s traded.

Who knows, if he ramps up his scoring even more, he may find he changes his mind about wanting to be traded at all.
