Breaking: Dylan Larkin Requests Trade from the Detroit Red Wings

Dylan Larkin has requested a trade from the Red Wings. Discover the reasons behind this unexpected move and its implications.

In a stunning development that came out of left field on Thursday, Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has formally requested a trade, according to multiple reports. The news was first broken by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

The 29-year-old center, who has spent his entire 11-year NHL career with the only franchise he’s ever known, made the request amid what is believed to be growing frustration with the team’s prolonged playoff drought. Detroit has missed the postseason for nine consecutive seasons despite incremental progress under GM Steve Yzerman.

Larkin, drafted 15th overall in 2014, just completed another strong campaign in 2025-26, posting 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games. He carries an $8.7 million AAV contract that runs through 2030-31 and includes a full no-trade clause until 2027-28. That clause gives Larkin significant control over any potential destination.

Friedman writes:

“Because no one will talk, we can only guess at the rationale, but there appear to be two critical factors: Detroit’s inability to make the playoffs, and a somewhat frosty relationship between the captain and the team’s top hockey executive. This is also another sign of how the league is changing. Players are getting bolder with these requests — especially in the aftermath of Matthew Tkachuk’s and Quinn Hughes’ power moves into different situations.”

GM Steve Yzerman is not actively shopping Larkin, but the organization is expected to listen to offers ahead of the June NHL Draft.

Red Wings fans are divided — some understand the captain’s desire for change, while others view it as a painful but necessary step toward a true rebuild.

As of now, no trade is imminent.
