Bobby Ryan Says, “Probably More Likely to be Traded Than Not.”

Bobby Ryan is well aware that he’s likely to be traded and says the hard part is waiting and trying not to get too anxious.

From the sounds of it, Bobby Ryan is really just waiting to be traded. While the forward has maintained that he’d be happy to sign an extension with the Detroit Red Wings, he’s aware his and the team’s situation makes him a likely trade candidate over the next couple of weeks. He says, it’s an odd experience just sort of waiting, but he understands it comes with the territory.

As per a story from Ansar Khan of mlive.com, Ryan is getting a bit anxious, but his wife is the one who’s really trying to keep tabs on all the chatter. He notes, “She’s trying to figure out where she might be moving to, what she’s going to do with the kids and extracurricular activities. My wife is probably more anxious about it than I am.”

When Ryan signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Red Wings, the 34-year-old probably knew it meant he could be moved. A rebuilding team, the April 12 deadline is a chance for the organization to pick up younger assets, especially if a team has interest in Ryan and believes he can offer something for a playoff push. He’s one of a number of pending unrestricted free agents that could be on the move. Forward Sam Gagner and defensemen Marc Staal and Jon Merrill could also go. GM Steve Yzerman could get offers for goaltender Jonathan Bernier and center Luke Glendening but it’s not entirely clear how apt the GM is move either if the right return isn’t there.

As for Ryan, someone is likely to come calling. He’s got experience and scoring ability (7 goals and 14 points in 31 games) and, better than that, he’s not expensive, which is a huge plus for teams looking to add these days.

“This is the first time I’ve been through it where I think I’m probably more likely to be traded than not,” he said. He knows it’s coming and it’s more a matter of when, not if.
