Bobby McMann Emerging as Intriguing Trade Chip for Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs face a tough decision on Bobby McMann as his trade value rises. What could Toronto realistically get in return?

The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a familiar position as the trade deadline approaches: balancing present competitiveness with long-term asset management. This season, one of the more fascinating storylines revolves around forward Bobby McMann, who has quietly put together a career year and is now generating buzz on the trade market.

At 29 years old, McMann carries a modest $1.35 million cap hit in the final year of his deal and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) this summer. For contenders tight against the salary cap, that combination — production plus affordability — makes him an attractive rental option.

Career Year Raises Value

McMann’s growth has been one of the brighter internal storylines for Toronto. He’s always been considered a depth forward with glimpses of scoring ability, but he’s taken a significant step forward this season. McMann skates well, plays fast, and shows a willingness to attack off the rush, proving he can play a top-six role if needed.

While he may not be considered a top-six winger by most teams, there’s no denying he can play a top-six role if called upon. McMann’s size (6-foot-2, over 200 pounds), speed, and goal-scoring ability make him a valuable middle-six piece who can play both a supporting role and a third-line spot.

Teams looking to add secondary scoring help in the lead-up to the playoffs, McMann is a player who checks a lot of boxes: a reasonable salary, a minimal term commitment, and a player who’s trending in a positive direction offensively.

Leafs’ Dilemma: Extend or Extract Value?

The front office in Toronto is in a tough spot with this decision. The ideal situation for the organization would be to retain McMann and attempt to work out an extension with him potentially in the range of $4 million per year if his progression continues.

The issue is that this all depends on how the organization’s chances are in the playoffs.

If the Maple Leafs are sitting on the outside looking in as the playoffs draw near, then holding onto McMann becomes less desirable. Giving away a productive winger for nothing in free agency is something that the organization cannot afford to do, especially considering how intriguing he currently is in the free agent market.

The truth of the matter is that if an organization thinks they are a legitimate contender in the NHL, then they do not hold onto assets that are set to become free agents unless they are in a position to make a legitimate playoff run. McMann could be an asset that the organization can move this offseason.

What Could the Return Be?

The debate surrounding McMann centers on his perceived ceiling. Some league executives reportedly view him as a complementary scorer rather than a definitive top-six upgrade. Historically, true top-line or established top-six wingers command first-round picks at the deadline. The question is whether McMann fits that category.

It only takes one team to believe he does.

There has been chatter about the possibility of Toronto landing a first-round selection in return. However, that may be optimistic unless bidding escalates. A more realistic comparable could resemble packages seen in recent winger rentals — perhaps two second-round picks or a second-rounder plus a mid-tier prospect.

His affordable cap hit strengthens Toronto’s leverage. Contending teams would not require significant salary retention to fit him in, widening the pool of potential suitors across both conferences.

Rental Appeal Across the League

McMann’s status as a pending UFA enhances his attractiveness for buyers unwilling to take on long-term commitments. Teams looking to add depth scoring without disrupting future cap flexibility may view him as an ideal short-term boost.

His skating ability aligns well with modern playoff hockey, where pace and transition play are magnified. Additionally, his willingness to engage physically adds value in postseason environments that demand layered, hard-to-play-against lineups.

Looking Ahead

It will all depend on the Leafs’ position in the standings and how much they believe in an extension. If they are comfortably in a playoff spot, it could make sense to try to win a game or two with McMann. If they are struggling, it could make sense to try to get the most out of him.

Sometimes, trade deadlines are based as much on perception as they are on production. McMann has clearly had a career year, which has put him in the spotlight in terms of perception. While it remains to be seen if he will bring a first-round pick in return, he has clearly become one of the more interesting assets in Toronto’s system.

Speculation will continue until the deadline. One thing is certain: Bobby McMann has never been more valuable.
