Is He Really Untouchable? Fans Aren’t Buying the New Robert Thomas Trade Narrative

A new report now suggests Blues forward Robert Thomas is not available via trade. Should fans believe this new report?

According to Andy Strickland, “Robert Thomas trade rumors can be put to rest. The #stlblues are not looking to move their #1 center. Expect Thomas to be on the roster when training camp begins in September.”

As trade speculation continues to swirl around Thomas, these reports push back on the idea that a deal that, just a few short weeks ago, felt nearly inevitable. He was discussed at the trade deadline, then discussed again in the summer. Now, suddenly, he’s not on the market? Perhaps the fact that Dylan Larkin asked for a trade out of Detroit means that things have changed.

Following reports that the Blues may not be actively shopping its star pivot, reactions online have been mixed. Some believe the messaging is strategic, a classic negotiating tactic designed to drive up offers rather than shut down talks entirely.

“You don’t trade good centers,” one user wrote. Another said, “We have been saying that since last year. He has never been asked to waive his no-trade clause, ever. Also, Armstrong never shopped him, ever. Yes, he took calls, but he never made calls. Why is this breaking news?”

But others were quick to challenge that thinking, pointing out that front offices often say one thing publicly while exploring options behind the scenes.“We’ve seen this dance before,” another fan noted, suggesting the situation feels familiar — a star player’s name surfaces, management downplays it, and momentum quietly builds anyway. Someone else added, “Wow what a coincidence Blues head office leaks to their beat reporter that they’re not trading Thomas right after Larkin goes on the market.”

The new report doesn’t make many fans feel at ease. “It’s going to be funny when he’s traded this summer,” one comment read, highlighting how little faith some have in public denials. Others wondered, if Thomas isn’t traded, what exactly are the Blues? They’re a team in the “mushy middle” with discussions surrounding their goaltender (Jordan Binnington) and a couple of defensemen (Colton Parayko to name one) and they aren’t trading Thomas?

If this is just positioning, the idea seems to be that new GM Alex Steen wants a team to “knock their socks off” with a trade offer.
