Blue Jackets Trying Add Defenseman, In On Jakob Chychrun

The Columbus Blue Jackets are rumored to be engaged in talks with different teams about adding a defenseman. Who have they tried to get?

A few reports note that the Columbus Blue Jackets have been active over the past few weeks and while it’s unclear if they’ll be successful in their quest, are trying to add a defenseman by any means necessary heading into the draft and free agency on July 13th.

At first, the Blue Jackets were linked to Ryan McDonagh and now they are being connected to another big-name defenseman who has been on the market for some time now. That second name is Jakob Chychrun.

As per Brian Hedger, beat writer for the Columbus Blue Jackets, “On the Chychrun front, two sources today told me the #CBJ and #Yotes are talking.” He adds, “Combine that w/ GM Jarmo Kekalainen saying the 12th overall pick could potentially be used to acquire a ‘young NHL player’ with term left … and maybe we’ve got something brewing?” Darren Dreger of TSN backed up this report and noted, “This is something to keep an eye on. No doubt CBJ is doing due diligence on Chychrun.”

Jakob Chychrun trade rumors Arizona Coyotes

Earlier reports had the Blue Jackets linked to McDonagh and Nick Kypreos had reported that before the d-man was traded to Nashville, the Tampa Bay Lightning had a deal in place with Columbus where McDonagh would be waived and Columbus would have agreed to claim him. Essentially, Tampa wasn’t sure McDonagh would agree to a deal and made backup plans. They then went back to the player and said, ‘it’s either Nashville or Columbus, you decide.’

So far, the Blue Jackets haven’t been able to land their guy and it will be interesting to see if Chychrun winds up there. He does not have trade protection in his contract so he cannot void any deal if one were made. It would simply be a matter of the Blue Jackets offering the Arizona Coyotes enough to make the trade. The Coyotes are actively looking to add another draft pick, per sources and the Blue Jackets have picks in the first three rounds they could move.
