Big Decision Looming For Blue Jackets on David Savard

The Columbus Blue Jackets might not have an easy decision to make when it comes to whether or not they trade David Savard.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have avoided being temporarily ruled out of the playoff equation, which is good news and bad news. The good news is that they could still play postseason games, which is always a plus. The bad news is that it makes a trade decision on defenseman David Savard a lot more difficult.

Savard is a player who will garner some interest at this year’s deadline. A pending UFA with an affordable salary for a handful of contenders, the Blue Jackets could have fetched a decent return if they were out of the playoff race and looking to stock up on assets prior to the deadline. Now, it would be difficult for the team to move the defenseman if they are still looking at jockeying for a playoff spot. As Elliotte Friedman points out in his latest 31 Thoughts column, “Things can always change, but the odds are not on him being a Blue Jacket next season, so what do they do?”

Friedman wonders if the Blue Jackets will lean towards keeping the blueliner and trying to compete for the playoffs or if they move him and try to maximize a potential return? Not only will this affect the team, but Friedman argues it will affect the rest of the market, potentially strengthening Nashville’s position with its available defencemen (Ryan Ellis or Mattias Ekholm).

As for who has had the most interest in Savard, the Winnipeg Jets have been tied to trade discussions for a couple of weeks now.

The Case for the Playoffs

Friedman writes that Columbus simply needs to make it for their to be a chance to go far. He writes, “Do not underestimate how much value there is in making/competing for the playoffs. That will resonate with owners. How much better is Columbus’s (or anyone’s) post-pandemic financial future if they get in?”

As for other trades the Blue Jackets might make, what applies for Savard, applies to others. When it comes to Nick Foligno, Friedman says, “I’m not sure trading him is something the Blue Jackets want to do, even if he’s not extended by the deadline. A lot of emotion there.”
