Blue Jackets Sign Charlie Coyle to 6-Year Extension

The Columbus Blue Jackets secure Charlie Coyle with a six-year extension worth $36 million. Discover the impact of this deal.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have inked center Charlie Coyle to a new, six-year contract extension. The deal will pay him $6 million per season, for a total of $36 million.

GM Don Waddell said of the signing:

“Charlie made a tremendous impact on and off the ice for us last season, and keeping him in Columbus was a priority. He is the definition of a true pro, and a durable, reliable, productive right-shot center whose leadership, character, and consistency are extremely valuable in this league.  We are thrilled that he will continue to be a very important part of the Columbus Blue Jackets for years to come.”

In a relatively weaker free agent market, Coyle was one of the bigger names that could have become available at center. After a tumultuous 2024-25 split between Boston and Colorado, the 33-year-old center thrived in his new environment, playing all 82 games in 2025-26 and posting 20 goals and 38 assists for 58 points — just two shy of his career high.

Averaging over 18 minutes per night, Coyle provided consistent two-way play, leadership, and secondary scoring on one of Columbus’s most reliable lines. His performance helped stabilize a young Blue Jackets roster pushing toward playoff contention.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent, Coyle’s no longer available and the Blue Jackets have taken care of some important roster business.
