As Columbus Blue Jackets fans wait for news that superstar restricted free agent Pierre-Luc Dubois is going to sign an extension with the team, there is some not-so good news being reported in respect to contract negotiations between the two sides. As per TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Blue Jackets may have hit a snag when it comes to a new deal.
Pierre-Luc Dubois is not in Columbus as camp approaches and remains unsigned. And now there are rumblings from a few teams around the league that Dubois may be looking for a change of scenery. Maybe wishful thinking on their part. But stay tuned on this one.
The fact that other teams are suggesting Dubois might want out means we should take this news with a bit more caution than normal, simply because these teams might be stirring the pot to see what happens. Still, that LeBrun has heard from these teams that Dubois might be available means someone is leaking the idea that the Blue Jackets could be willing to talk trade.
If so, this is huge. The Blue Jackets were basing pretty much their entire offseason around getting Dubois re-signed and missed out on a number of free agents. The team had created all sorts of cap space to get a deal done and if one doesn’t actually come to fruition, it will be hard to predict what comes next for the team.
How Did Things Get Here?
One has to imagine that either a) Dubois is not keen on the idea of staying in Columbus or b) the team has been low-balling him in negotiations. If the latter, it might be time for the Blue Jackets to either pay up or trade him and get the best possible value in return.
The Athletic wrote earlier this week that the Blue Jackets had passed along news that their offer to Dubois would not improve, but get worse, if the winger chose not to sign before training camp. If the two sides don’t get something done before camp, trade speculation is sure to heat up.
The Dubois is not even in Columbus is telling. Should he be in the U.S. he won’t necessarily have to quarantine, but if he isn’t, even if a deal magically gets done in the next few hours, he’ll miss part of camp.
