Insider Says Blackhawks Fielding Trade Offers for Alex DeBrincat

According to NHL insider and The Athletic’s scribe Pierre LeBrun, the Chicago Blackhawks are fielding offers and taking calls on forward Alex DeBrincat. LeBrun writes, “The re-building Blackhawks are having ongoing discussions with teams on a potential Alex DeBrincat trade.” He adds that there’s no guarantee he’s moved, but” they’re listening for sure.”

LeBrun details that if a trade does happen, the Blackhawks are looking for future assets in any deal. They want a young player, high picks, and a top-prospect-type return. In other words, it would take a serious offer to make them consider a move. This is a story Elliotte Friedman confirmed when he previously reported that any Blackhawks’ player not named Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Seth Jones is available. Like Tampa Bay did with Brandon Hagel, the Blackhawks will consider making a move if a team comes forward with an offer they don’t feel they can refuse.

DeBrincan is a 24-year-old winger coming off a 41-goal season. He was billed by many as the future of Blackhawks’ offense, but the timing of his progression and when he’s due a contract qualifying offer of $9 million doesn’t really fall in line with where the Blackhawks are at in the rebuild. He’s got one year left on his contract at a $6.4-million AAV and then he’s an RFA with salary arbitration rights. He’s a better fit for another team that is in win-now mode or will be competitive in the next two or three seasons.

DeBrincat Will Require a Massive Investment

Not only will teams have to give up a lot to acquire DeBrincat, but they’ll also have to be prepared to invest big time in him over the long term. His sheer cost alone will scare off some would-be suitors. That said, there will be teams willing to give up a lot to acquire such a talented player.
