In the wake of an investigation being conducted by the Calgary Flames into allegations against coach Bill Peters, — both of the racist nature and now apparently physical abuse allegations — Peters will not be behind the bench for the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, and likely not for any other games until the issue is sorted.
That could mean, if Peters is let go, Calgary Flames associate coach Geoff Ward will serve as interim head coach and eventually take over the coaching duties of the team.
In additional to the issues surrounding Peters as coach, there are now reports that GM Brad Treliving’s job might be on the hot seat in Calgary.
Todd Saelhof of the Ottawa Sun writes:
Many believe Treliving was down to his last chance as GM of the Flames when he hired Peters in April 2018.
With that, it means he hitched his wagon to Peters in one last-ditch effort to save his own job with the Flames.
Saelof goes on to say that it appears Treliving hitched his wagon to the wrong person and that could wind up costing him his job when all the smoke clears. If Treliving was hanging his hopes on Peters, it appears that didn’t work and the organization may want to distance themselves from any of this mess, even if Treliving is not responsible for the actions of his coach.
It is likely that Peters lied, but at the same time, there’s a good chance Treliving didn’t even consider asking the question, ‘Did you hit or use racial slurs against your players while in Carolina or on other teams?’ It’s not the first thing you’d think a coach would do.
