Big Nikishin Trade to Rangers Fell Apart, But Carolina Still Wants Hellebuyck

The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers had the framework of an Alexander Nikishin trade in place earlier this offseason, according to Elliotte Friedman. The deal fell through when Nikishin and the Rangers couldn’t agree on a contract.

Speaking on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman said the two clubs had a deal, but the contract side never came together. He also believes the St. Louis Blues were legitimately interested for a while. The rumored ask from the restricted free agent defenceman was a five-year deal at around $9 million per season.

Whether $9 million is too much is up for debate. It’s steep right now, but Nikishin is about to turn 25, and a five-year deal would run until he’s nearly 30. With a rising cap and a premium on offensive defensemen who can quarterback a power play, some may argue it isn’t as far out of line as it looks.

Meanwhile, Carolina’s price is high. Friedman believes the Hurricanes want something close to two first-round picks, or comparable talent, in return.

Hurricanes Want to Flip Into Hellebuyck?

There is also a Winnipeg angle. Friedman thinks Carolina remains very interested in Connor Hellebuyck and would like to land him. He believes Nikishin’s agent was given permission to talk to other teams, possibly to see whether a three-way deal with the Jets could work.

If the Hurricanes could somehow move Nikishin to a situation that would let them move the pieces they need for Hellebuyck, that would be their preference.

Chris Johnston noted the Hurricanes don’t have to do anything. Nikishin’s options are limited, and he can mostly sit out and hope that forces a change. They are also in a position to wait on Hellebuyck as no other teams have stepped up and made an offer the Jets would consider.

Johnston said Carolina feels comfortable with its depth, and this is a want move, not one they need to make.
