In an off-ice story, but certainly professional hockey related news, a number of media changes came down on Friday in respect to writers, columnists and media personalities losing their jobs or being laid off.
News started circulating that a number of writers from The Athletic were being let go on Friday, estimated to be some 46 writers in total. Among those scribes who said goodbye on Twitter were Columbus Blue Jackets insider Tom Reed, Joe Yerdon, the insider for the Buffalo Sabres, Marc Dumont who covered the Montreal Canadiens, and Florida Panthers scribe Geroge Richards.
It wasn’t just the NHL coverage where cuts were made either. According to reports, the company laid off 8% of staff (46 people) site wide, implemented staff-wide pay cuts -Most pay cuts are 10%, per memo obtained by @Axios -CEO Alex Mather and new subscriber growth was down 20-30%. The podcast ad revenue was severely impacted and it was being called a “dark day for the company”
As per a statement from a spokesperson at the company:
“While we are hopeful that sports will soon resume, this measure was necessary to ensure that the company can weather the uncertainty that lies ahead. Overall, our subscriber base remains steady and we are proud of our newsroom’s continuing coverage of the return of sports.”
Chris Cuthbert Also Making Big Change
In other news, Chris Cuthbert of TSN is leaving his position with the network and joining Sportsnet and the crew that covers Hockey Night in Canada.
Cuthbert, was the voice of the Canadian football League for many years and took to social media to thank TSN for his time there. He wrote:
After 15 years at TSN I’m moving on. Just want to send out love, respect and gratitude to the amazing men and women I’ve had the privilege to work with since 2005. You were all star teammates and made me better at my job. You will all be missed.
John Shannon then posted that Cuthbert would be joining the Sportsnet crew and will eventually be play-by-play announcer upon the NHL’s return to play.
