Babcock Blowback Already Impacting Oilers as Agents Say Clients “Concerned”

The NHL’s investigation into Mike Babcock has begun and the Edmonton Oilers are already getting blowback from players around the NHL.

The official investigation by the NHL into Mike Babcock’s last tenure as a head coach is officially underway and the fallout from the Edmonton Oilers’ desire to see this through has players across the NHL concerned. In fact, some players on the Oilers’ active roster are already looking for an explanation as to how and why Babcock became “the guy” among the team’s leadership group.

Elliotte Friedman wrote in a column on Monday, “Several agents of Edmonton players who were not involved the in direct conversations with Babcock also voiced concerns, adding they didn’t like the idea of clients being traded there, either.” He added that within the organization, there are members of the Oilers roster who are owed an explanation.

“One thing those Oilers players who met with Babcock should do is explain to teammates what convinced them this should be a legit option,” Friedman wrote.

In their coaching search, — one which has seen the team pivot several times due to roadblocks along the way — the Oilers prioritized experience, a winning pedigree, and a candidate capable of challenging the team’s superstar core. After being denied permission to speak with Bruce Cassidy, they turned their attention to Babcock, who met with ownership, management, and a small group of players. Those players liked what they heard ane became convinced Babcock was a good fit.

Of course, that wasn’t the entire team and there is still a lot of uncertainty about Babcock’s past methods, how he treated players, and whether or not he’s really changed.

The Oilers wanted the NHL and NHLPA to inform them of any potential hiring concerns, which might include supplemental discipline if a candidate were brought in. While the NHLPA voiced objections, Oilers leadership remained satisfied and was prepared to proceed with Babcock’s hiring, pending league approval.

Other Players Now Concerned About Joining Oilers

Now, agents of players around the NHL are making it known that many of their clients want nothing to do with Babcock. If the Oilers hire him, those players will either avoid Edmonton or have real reservations about going there.

Maybe this will change how the Oilers feel about pushing forward. However, Friedman also notes, “The Oilers appear willing to wait to see the conclusions of this investigation before ruling out Babcock as a contender.” He adds, “Now that the playoffs are over, there is also Vegas’s decision on Cassidy. Will they grant permission for the Oilers, or anyone else, to talk to him?”
