Auston Matthews was going to be likely looking at some supplemental discipline after delivering a nasty crosscheck to Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin during the Heritage Classic game on Sunday afternoon. A back-and-forth scrum in the Sabres crease got more than a bit edgy when Matthews two-handed Dahlin in the neck and it shouldn’t come as a surprise if he’s suspended for a game or two.

Some are saying it’s a $5000 finable offense. Others believe a crosscheck to the neck should come with a suspension. It will be interesting to see what the NHL DoPS decides. Some have said that Dahlin’s lack of a reaction to the play will help Matthews, while others argue Matthews is lucky this wasn’t one inch in the wrong direction as he could have really injured Dahlin.
Unfortunately, these days it’s hard to know what the NHL DoPS is going to decide when it comes to any play they review. Matthews was given a two-minute penalty on the play. It wasn’t considered a major, nor was he tossed from the game. That doesn’t have to be a precursor for the league to take a longer look, but it can be a factor in their decision.
