Another Oilers Injury Scare? Babcock Reveals Levi Out; Jarry Starts vs. Maple Leafs

Devon Levi missed practice for the Oilers Friday, and it’s unclear if he’s injured. Edmonton will call up an emergency goalie for Saturday.

The Edmonton Oilers are dealing with more roster uncertainty after goaltender Devon Levi missed practice Friday, leaving his status up in the air. An injury, if that’s what this is, is not good news for the Oilers, as Levi has been incredible since his arrival and a key part of the Oilers’ 8-1-1 record.

Head coach Mike Babcock confirmed that Tristan Jarry will start Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team has not said what the injury is or how long Levi could be out, but Babcock indicated the Oilers will call up a goalie to serve as Jarry’s backup. According to Bob Stauffer, that player is likely Matt Tomkins, though that was his assumption rather than a confirmed move.

The goaltending change comes as Edmonton also adjusts on the blue line. Defenceman Mattias Ekholm is out with a concussion after his head hit the ice hard in Thursday’s game, and the club will call up a defenceman as well.

Practice lines suggest several moves. Shakir Mukhamadullin was promoted from the press box to the top pairing alongside Evan Bouchard. Up front, Trent Frederic and Ike Howard came off the fourth line, with Max Jones and Filip Hallander stepping in alongside Colton Dach.

Projected lines and pairings from practice:

  • Podkolzin–McDavid–Draisaitl
  • Kapanen–Nugent-Hopkins–Hyman
  • Formenton–Michaels–Joseph
  • Jones–Dach–Hallander
  • Extras: Howard, Frederic
  • Mukhamadullin–Bouchard
  • Shea–Murphy
  • Walman–Emberson
  • Extra: Dickinson

It was projected that Jarry was going to play Saturday regardless. However, anything lengthy for Levi is problematic, especially given the way he’s been playing. He’s arguably earned the starting job already for the Oilers, and while Jarry is having a better season than last, there’s still concern that he can maintain his improved level of production.

The Oilers are expected to provide more clarity on Levi’s condition before puck drop.
