Andrei Svechnikov Turns Down Massive Deal from Hurricanes

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Carolina Hurricanes have offered forward Andrei Svechnikov 8 years x $7.5 million per season. He said no.

According to Elliotte Friedman and as part of his recent 31 Thoughts report, the Carolina Hurricanes are believed to have offered forward Andrei Svechnikov eight years x $7.5 million per season and he’s turned it down. Saying the number is not low, the player is willing to bet on himself to do even better.

Speculation is that Svechnikov will sign a bridge deal with the Hurricanes — for now. In an uncertain time and while there’s always a risk of injury, he’s going to gamble on his ability to elevate his game and hit his next contract out of the park.

It’s logical to assume at least a two-year deal to get Svechnikov through the decline in revenues with the league thanks to a COVID-19 pandemic. From there, the team and GM Don Waddell will get down to the real business. Waddell said the goal is to keep Svechnikov with the team a long time and he also agreed that with the economics of the NHL the way they are right now, it might makes sense to do a bridge deal. From there, the team and the player can examine a long-term. He put offered no timetable for an extension. “One way or another, there’s no doubt that we’ll sign Andrei at some point to some kind of extension,” he said.

Hurricanes Still Positive in Negotiations

Waddell noted that Svechnikov has one more year on his deal and he’s not worried about being unable to get the player signed. He noted that Andrei has said he “definitely wants to be here, his representation has been very forthright about that.”

The Hurricanes are happy to do a short-term deal for a couple seasons, then lock the player in for another eight years and have Svechnikov for the next ten seasons.

In the end, it might cost the Hurricanes more money, but at least they won’t lose one of the most young and dynamic players in the NHL right now.
