Analyst Isn’t Buying The Latest Connor McDavid Contract Rumor
An Oilers analyst pushed back on speculation that Connor McDavid could be in line to sign a record-breaking contract.
With Leo Carlsson and Connor Bedard resetting the market by signing massive new contract extensions that have made them the highest- and third-highest-paid players in the NHL, many have begun to wonder what the actual best player in the world — Connor McDavid — will make when he’s up for a new deal.
The guys on Spittin’ Chiclets recently speculated about just that, throwing out $23 million and $25 million per season as possibilities for what he could earn.
While McDavid is worth whatever he wants, Edmonton Oilers analyst Jason Gregor doesn’t buy that the superstar center will max out his next contract, especially if he hasn’t won a Stanley Cup yet.
“You think Connor McDavid is going to go and try to get $23 million? If Connor McDavid hasn’t won a cup in two years and his contract’s up, you think he’s going to want to go get as much as he can? ‘Cuz that will just lower his chance of winning. It makes no sense from a pure rational thought process. McDavid wants to win, taking $23 million is not gonna do it. Whether it’s in Edmonton or anywhere, he’s not gonna do it. Because he wants to win and he knows if he takes up too much, his chance of winning is less. It’s just how it goes,”
The 29-year-old McDavid’s two-year, $25 million contract extension signed with the Oilers in October will begin next season (2026-27).

It’s hard to disagree with Gregor. McDavid’s sole focus at this point in his career is winning a Stanley Cup, and if he hasn’t done so by next summer, when he’s extension-eligible, or the following summer, when he could hit free agency, then it’s hard to imagine him demanding a contract that would likely make that goal more difficult to achieve.
That was just proven with his latest contract — albeit only two years — where he stayed at $12.5 million annually in order to help Edmonton try to build out a better roster.
Ultimately, however, when it comes to McDavid’s future, everything will depend on how he and the Oilers fare this season and next.
