Alexandar Georgiev Denies Asking for Trade from Rangers

While he could still be dealt this season, Alexandar Georgiev has denied asking for a trade from the New York Rangers.

New York Rangers’ goaltender Alexandar Georgiev suggests we don’t believe everything we hear. As per a report by Larry Brooks of the New York Post, the netminder says he’s not sure where rumors of a requested trade came from and he didn’t ask the team to be moved this past offseason.

What Georgiev did say was that he is looking to moving forward after a disappointing 2020-21 season and having a better year in 2021-22. He knows he’ll play where his coaches slot him and he’s not overly concerned with whether he’s the starter or the backup.

“I just take it one day at a time,” said Georgiev, who noted that goaltenders being labeled No. 1 or No. 2 isn’t terribly important. He said his job is to simply work, but he admitted he wants to play as much as possible. He didn’t suggest he felt he was entitled to the playing time, but he is ready to earn it. “I work hard, I’m excited for the season and I want to play as much as possible.

Varying reports confused the rumors of Alexandar Georgiev asking for a trade from New York Rangers.

As for where the trade rumors came from and talk he asked to be moved, He said, “The rumors were false, I don’t know where they came from.” He added, “You can be dealt pretty much as a player without a no-move clause, so I just worked as usual and tried not to think about it.”

Georgiev will battle it out with Igor Shesterkin but will be slotted in as the backup after Shesterkin signed an extension with the Rangers this offseason. The starter will be making $5.66 million while Georgiev has one year remaining on his current deal at $2,425,000.

There’s always a chance he could still be traded as he’s on an expiring deal. That doesn’t mean he’ll ask and it doesn’t mean he’ll complain about his standing on the team prior to any potential move.
