Alex Newhook an Exciting Addition to an Already Stacked Avalanche Lineup

The Colorado Avalanche announced that prospect Alex Newhook will make his NHL debut tonight, giving them yet another very skilled forward.

Early this morning, it was announced that Alex Newhook will be making his NHL debut with the Colorado Avalanche tonight in a game versus the San Jose Sharks. The 20-year-old has been regarded as one of the games better prospects since being taken 16th overall at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

The Newfoundland native has put up big numbers at every level this far in his career. During his draft season, he appeared in 53 games with the Victoria Grizzlies in the BCHL where he scored 38 goals and 102 points. This came off of what was already a very impressive rookie season in which he had 22 goals and 66 points in just 45 contests.

Since being drafted, he has spent two seasons with Boston College where he continued to produce at a high level. As a freshman, he recorded a team leading 19 goals and 42 points in 34 games. While he was limited to just 12 games this season, he was well on his way to another big year with seven goals and 16 points. With his college season having ended, Newhook joined the Colorado Eagles of the AHL and once again continued to impress, registering five goals and nine points in just eight games. He is certainly earned this opportunity with the Avs.

Line Projections

Now, he joins a roster that already has some major offensive talent up front in players like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Gabriel Landeskog. While those three will continue to play on the top line, Newhook is expected to center a line with talented players in Nazem Kadri and Andre Burakovsky. It is also being reported he will see time on the powerplay, which will help him be able to showcase his true skill.

Colorado Avalanche

While the Avalanche are a lock for the playoffs, they are in a dog fight with the Vegas Golden Knights for the top spot in the West Division, which is huge this year given the team who finishes second will likely play a first round series against a very underrated team in the Minnesota Wild. The point of this is to state that it isn’t like they are just giving Newhook a look in games that don’t mean anything, as there next few games are extremely important.

Given how well he played in his brief AHL stint, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him become a regular in the Avs lineup this season as well as into the playoffs. It is yet another great addition to an already stacked Avalanche team that is not only serious contenders for the Stanley Cup this season, but many to come in the future.
