10 Trade Targets of the Calgary Flames

Darren Haynes of the Athletic outlines 10 possible trade targets for the Calgary Flames before the trade deadline and they all have one thing in common.

According to Darren Haynes of The Athletic the Calgary Flames will have their eyes on potentially 10 players. He notes that the Flames are the only NHL team without a right-shooting winger at the moment and that the only other team who is built like that is the Detroit Red Wings. We all know how they’re doing this season.

Understanding that a right-shot forward is high on the priority list for the Flames, Haynes top-ten targets make a lot of sense.

Right-Shot NHL’ers With Term

In looking at players with term still left on their NHL deals, Haynes points out Kyle Palmieri from the New Jersey Devils, Josh Anderson from the Blue Jackets, and Kasperi Kapanen from the Maple Leafs should be high on the list.

Other names include Ondrej Kase, Rickard Rakell and Ryan Getzlaf from Anaheim along with Nikita Gusev from the Devils.

NHL’ers as Rentals

In looking at pure rentals, he notes Tyler Toffoli, Wayne Simmonds, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau will be the top targets.

Toffoli was listed by Pierre LeBrun as one of the key players for the Flames while Simmonds has said he understands the business of hockey but has no desire to leave New Jersey. Of course, Pageau has been rumored in the trade mill for months and there will be plenty of interest in his services.

Flames Need to Do Something

Right in the mix of a very tight Pacific Division, Calgary has the ability to make moves other teams may not. With only 44 out of a possible 50 contracts taken and plenty of cap space to play with, they have the edge over other Pacific teams who are a bit handcuffed by limited funds and space.

Brad Treliving already said he’s looking to spend some money, it’s just a matter of trying to figure out where and who he spends it on.
