White House Over Maple Leafs? Toronto Media Calls Out Auston Matthews

There is no winning for Auston Matthews with the Toronto media right now.

Captaining Team USA to its first Olympic gold since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” is one of the greatest moments of Auston Matthews’ life. Achieving such a feat should only be seen as a positive—and a tremendous one at that. However, as we all know in today’s world, it’s far more complicated than that.

From the Americans caught laughing on camera to President Donald Trump saying he had to invite the women’s hockey team to the White House, to Matthews and his teammates attending the White House to meet with Trump themselves, there has been no shortage of backlash.

These have been major topics of discussion in all NHL markets, but in Toronto, it’s louder than anywhere else. Some believe it’s all being blown out of proportion, while others, like Damien Cox of the Toronto Star, argue that as captain of the Maple Leafs, Matthews’ recent actions reflect a total lack of judgment and could signal the start of the end of his time in Toronto.

Cox wrote:

“All he had to say was he understood the feelings of Canadians in these troubled times. He could have just skipped the White House nonsense, demonstrating much needed leadership and proof the Leafs were his top priority. But Matthews preferred to be feted by a president who dismisses the very idea of Canadian sovereignty.

Remember, the Leafs took the captaincy away from Tavares to give it to Matthews. We know that, as a local lad and proud Canadian, Tavares cherished the opportunity to wear the C for the Leafs. So he was stripped of his captaincy so Matthews could have it and not treasure it? But No. 34 made his choice. We may well one day look back at this as the day when the Matthews era unofficially ended in Toronto,”

The 28-year-old Matthews had already drawn plenty of criticism, and the Maple Leafs’ lifeless 4-2 loss in Tampa Bay on Wednesday night has only added fuel to the fire as their already slim playoff hopes slip even further away.

Auston Matthews’ Toronto Dilemma

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, though it must be difficult for these players to navigate all of it and make the right decisions. No matter what they do, some people will agree, while others will vehemently disagree.

Most players just want to focus on what happens on the ice, which Matthews himself acknowledged on Wednesday: “I don’t like to get political or get into that kind of stuff.” Unfortunately, it’s impossible to avoid right now, and all of Team USA is having to deal with it—especially the captain, who is also the captain and face of a Canadian NHL team.

To the surprise of many, the guy who grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, has been extremely committed to staying in Toronto despite constant chatter that he’ll one day bolt to play in his home country—i.e., Matthew Tkachuk and Quinn Hughes. Even in the midst of such a disappointing 2025-26 season, he has remained steadfast in that commitment.

That said, if more of the market and fan base continue to turn on him, it will inevitably raise the question of how much longer Matthews will want to deal with all of this—because everyone has a breaking point.
