The Canucks’ Massive Dilemma: Trade Elias Pettersson or Not?

Elias Pettersson hits 500 points, but can he return to his old magic? The Canucks’ future might hinge on him finding his full game again.

Elias Pettersson hit a milestone Tuesday night, picking up his 500th career point in Vancouver’s 5-3 loss to Anaheim. It’s time to congratulate him as a fan. It’s a nice milestone to have reached. But that success also sheds light on a bigger question – the sort of elephant in the room. That question centers on who Elias Pettersson is right now as a player, and what he can bring to his Canucks team.

Pettersson Is a Player Who Not Long Ago Put Up 102 Points

This is a player who once hit 102 points in a year, but he’s nowhere near that guy right now. The last few seasons have been brutal — injuries, up-and-down play, all the drama with J.T. Miller, and the pressure of trying to be the leader on a team that’s been struggling around him.

When you watch him now, it’s pretty obvious there’s a gap between what he wants to do out there and what his body is actually letting him do. His elite timing and puck sense used to turn into real production — he made the game look so easy. That hasn’t completely gone away, but it’s definitely not all the way back yet.

Pettersson Isn’t Yet the Player We All Remember So Well

Fans remember the young Pettersson who could turn on the lights in a single shift. It’s tough to watch him play – even succeed – and realize he’s still trying to find that player who’s hidden somewhere in that Canucks sweater. Has to be. It’s been hard not to feel a little wistful watching him work to find the magic again.

Even so, you can see he’s on the right track. This year, he’s had moments where he looks like the old Pettersson again. He’s producing, generating offence, and picking up some nice milestones.

Those two assists versus Anaheim pushed him to 500 points in only 533 games — second quickest in team history. He also moved ahead of J.T. Miller for ninth in all-time power-play points for the Canucks. So yeah, he’s still making an impact, even if the rest of the team isn’t quite there with him.

The Trade Chatter Shows the Problem with Pettersson

There’s been chatter about trading Pettersson, and you have to know there would be takers. Someone’s willing to take the risk that he’ll be able to reprise his former success. Still, some talk as if he might be moved.

Instead, the reality is that Pettersson is still a player you should build around. The Canucks have talent and potential for skill that needs to be developed in their young players. There’s hope this could be an interesting and successful roster for the next few seasons.

But the Canucks only reach their ceiling if Pettersson is the one pulling it forward, not running to keep pace with it. Right now, it feels like they are holding their breath, hoping he can find that complete game again, the one that made him so special. If he does, this franchise could hit a real stride.

Pettersson Is Far from a 100-Point Player This Season

Could Pettersson become a 100-point player again? It isn’t going to happen this season. He isn’t dominating every night. But the skill, vision, drive, and ability to impact games in ways few others on the roster can still show up in small pieces.

The big thing Pettersson needs is to get into a consistent rhythm so he’s the one lifting the team, rather than fighting to keep up with them. The Canucks should give him some time and see if this year lets him show he’s still that player. When he flips the switch, it’s good for him, and it can really change things for the whole group.

Until that happens, fans are just watching, hoping, and sometimes shaking their heads. Tuesday’s milestone was nice, but it’s also a reminder that the Canucks’ star still has a ton of work to do if he wants to get back to the player he used to be. The big question is — can he actually do it? Can he become the guy this team still needs him to be?
