Quinn Hughes Saga & Latest NHL Trade Buzz: Canucks, Oilers, Devils

The latest trade buzz on Quinn Hughes and the Vancouver Canucks, the Edmonton Oilers, and the New Jersey Devils.

The Vancouver Canucks lost again on Monday night and are last in the NHL in points percentage, so how much longer will Quinn Hughes be able to handle it? The Edmonton Oilers like Tristan Jarry, but a deal is complicated, and the New Jersey Devils are aggressively scouring the trade market, whether that’s for Hughes or other big-name players.

Let’s dive into all of that and more in the latest edition of NHL trade buzz.

The Latest on Quinn Hughes and the Canucks

After snapping a four-game losing streak with an impressive 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night, the Canucks came right back down to earth on Monday night, shutout 4-0 by the Detroit Red Wings to zap any of the good vibes.

Hughes’ pointless drought extended to six games, and you have to wonder how much his future is weighing on him, especially given the number of landing spots that have been rumored of late.

Vancouver has had conversations with New Jersey about sending Hughes to play with his brothers, though a deal is far from guaranteed. The Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers are lurking in the weeds, while Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins have also emerged, given their stable of draft picks and prospects that would interest the Canucks.

In other news, pending UFA Kiefer Sherwood remains a hot commodity around the league, as just about every playoff contender would love to acquire him; however, nothing appears imminent with his desires for a new contract being a bit of a hold-up in the process.

Tristan Jarry to the Oilers: Sounds Unlikely

Edmonton has been linked to Jarry for several weeks now, and although their interest in the two-time All-Star is very real, a deal feels increasingly unlikely.

Stan Bowman wants to form a tandem of Jarry and Stuart Skinner, which Dubas and the Penguins have no issue with. What creates problems is the Oilers’ need for salary retention on Jarry’s five-year, $26.875 million contract, an accommodation that Pittsburgh has zero interest in.

The Penguins, currently occupying a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, make matters even more complicated, so unless one side changes its stance, these talks could stall.

It all coincides with Skinner having just strung three great games together, perhaps providing the Oilers with more time to truly solve their goaltending woes without rushing into a move they’ll eventually regret.

New Jersey Has a Lot of Balls in the Air

While the Devils have their sights set on reuniting the Hughes brothers in New Jersey, GM Tom Fitzgerald has plenty of other options he’s sniffing out in case that doesn’t come to fruition, especially if the asking price involves captain Nico Hischier, which is a non-starter.

The Devils would rather add up front than subtract, with interest in several of the Predators’ veterans such as Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Ryan O’Reilly, as well as Blues captain Brayden Schenn.

In the midst of all the Hughes chaos, New Jersey has fallen out of the playoff picture thanks to a five-game losing streak, so they may have to act sooner rather than later to stop their slide.
