Panthers Could Turn to Oilers — Past and Present — for Goalie Help

Could the Florida Panthers target Oilers goalies from the past and present, namely Stuart Skinner and Connor Ingram?

Not long ago, we pointed out that the Ottawa Senators were being linked to both current Edmonton Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram and ex-Oilers netminder Stuart Skinner. They aren’t the only team.

According to Allen Greenberg of Florida Hockey Now, “The much-maligned Stu Skinner may just excel with a defense of the quality of the Panthers.” He adds, “Connor Ingram had some good seasons in Arizona and had an excellent year in Edmonton this past season. He played as many as 50 games a season in the past.” Both are on a short list that the Panthers might consider talking to as pending UFAs this summer, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Sergei Bobrovsky.

Bobrovsky is rumored to be asking for a long-term deal at a hefty price tag. 38 next season, he is coming off his worst statistical season and has just finished a seven-year contract with a $10 million annual cap hit. His numbers regressed this season, and the Panthers seem less-than-thrilled about overpaying to keep him around. That could lead them to explore other options while Bobrovsky tests the market on July 1.

The market isn’t ripe with great goaltending options. Aside from Bobrovsky himself, Frederik Andersen of Carolina is one of the bigger names. Despite subpar numbers in these playoffs, he may re-sign with the Hurricanes.

Does this open the door for one of Edmonton’s former goalies to jump to the Panthers? What would be intriguing is the idea of Florida picking up one of Ingram or Skinner, and the Oilers taking a swing at Bobrovsky. It seems unlikely they will, seeing as the price tag might not fit their plans, but GM Stan Bowman needs to do something about his goaltending.

The trick is they still have Tristan Jarry on payroll at a cap hit of $5.375 million for two more seasons, and they’re on the hook at a hit of $1.5 million per season for three more seasons after buying out Jack Campbell. Can Edmonton really afford to pay upwards of $13-$15 million on goaltending? Probably not if Jarry and Bobrovsky are the two goalies they’re paying for.

For the Panthers, it would be a significant savings on the cap. Neither Skinner nor Ingram will cost a lot. At least, not compared to what Bobrovsky will be asking for.
