Insider Hints Oilers to Extend Ty Emberson in the New Year
Oilers host and local insider Bob Stauffer hinted the Edmonton Oilers are set to sign a contract extension with Ty Emberson in the new year.
Oilers Now host and Oilers color commentator Bob Stauffer joined Thursday night’s broadcast of the Edmonton Oilers vs. Minnesota Wild during the second intermission. When asked about defenseman Ty Emberson and his performance in the game, Stauffer praised Emberson’s strong play and noted that he is steadily growing into his role with the team. Stauffer also suggested that the Oilers could look to extend Emberson’s contract early in the new year, highlighting the organization’s confidence in the young defenseman’s potential.
Specifically, Stauffer seemed to indicate that this is something the two sides — the Oilers and Emberson — had already held preliminary talks about. It sounds like they are on the same page about getting a deal done.
Emberson is coming on strong with the Oilers. After a bit of a slow start following a trade from the San Jose Sharks, the relatively inexperienced blueliner has found his game. On Thursday night, he had an assist and a fight, playing regularly in an Oilers dominant 7-1 win over the Wild.

Oilers Like What They See In Emberson
Emberson has only played 56 games in the NHL. He played 30 with the Sharks in 2023-24 and has added another 26 for the Oilers this season. His underlying numbers looked solid in a small sample size but an injury last season left question marks about what Emberson could really do. Head coach Kris Knoblauch knew Emberson prior to his joining the NHL and the Oilers felt he could be a big addition when they traded Cody Ceci to San Jose and got Emberson back.
It looks like that was a smart move that has paid off for the Oilers. Stauffer is suggesting they like Emberson so much they’re already trying to get him re-signed.

I would love to see him signed long term, but I am sure he will be looking at a short term 2 year deal. He is already showing well, he is young, steadily improving, and showed last year in a small sample size, that he can do well in tough minutes.
