Oilers Still Talking Chychrun Trade, But Price Needs to Come Down

The Edmonton Oilers have been linked to Jakob Chychrun, but the price is too high, especially if Arizona wants Philp Broberg.

According to Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic (subscription required), the door isn’t necessarily closed when it comes to discussions between the Arizona Coyotes and Edmonton Oilers in regard to defenseman Jakob Chychrun. He writes in a recent article, “Chychrun could be the missing piece for a Stanley Cup championship. Again, the contract is excellent and the term fits perfectly into the team’s contention window as it matches Leon Draisaitl’s deal.”

That said, Nugent-Bowman isn’t confident this is a deal that happens based on the current ask and how confident the Oilers are that their own blueliner, Philip Broberg, will turn into a strong hockey player for them.

The scribe writes that Broberg would have to be part of any package going back to Arizona and he’s not confident the Oilers want to go there. He explains, “I’m told, the Oilers remain unwavering in their belief in Broberg. Though his preseason play was underwhelming, there are those within the organization who believe Broberg will be as good and possibly better than Chychrun.” He adds that they think he can get there as early as the end of this season. If true, it makes sense the Oilers would close down any conversations with the Coyotes if Broberg is the ask. If he’s a non-starter, the two sides would clearly have to figure something else out.

Nugent-Bowman is likely correct as the Oilers recalled Broberg on Friday in time for Saturday’s game versus the Calgary Flames. Despite his pre-season struggles and talk that Markus Niemelainen outplayed him and earned an early spot on the team, it’s Broberg who is getting the look this weekend.

What Would Nugent-Bowman Do?

Nugent-Bowman actually believes the Oilers should pull the trigger on that trade. He would give up Broberg for Chychrun despite Chychrun’s injury history and recent struggles. He notes, “But as long as you have assurances that Chychrun has no chronic ailments, the Oilers should feel comfortable acquiring him.”
