Oilers Analyst Calls for Major Response to Matthew Tkachuk in Next Matchup

One analyst believes the Oilers need to send Matthew Tkachuk a message next time they play the Panthers.

The Edmonton Oilers and their must be beyond sick and tired of Matthew Tkachuk. Not only has he always been a pest to play against—first with the rival Calgary Flames and now with the Florida Panthers—but over the last three years, he’s repeatedly crushed their dreams on the biggest stages.

As if beating the Oilers in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals wasn’t enough, now add taking down Connor McDavid and Team Canada for Olympic gold to pour even more salt into the wound. For some, those battles might stay on the ice, but with Tkachuk, the rivalry extends far beyond it, and one analyst believes Edmonton needs to make him pay the next time Florida comes to town on March 19.

Kevin Karius discussed Tkachuk’s bridesmaid chirp at Leon Draisaitl and his follow-up social media antics during The Kevin Karius Show on Tuesday, urging the Oilers to come out firing and physically challenge the superstar winger all night.

Karius said:

“Total first class by the Tkachuks, most notably Matthew. Can’t wait. I mean, that game when they come here, the Oilers have to—I would like to see, to be honest with you, a Tampa Bay–Florida style game. I think I’d like to see the Oilers turn into Tampa Bay for a night. And I don’t care if you’re going to bring up Brown, I don’t even care—bring up these guys and absolutely throttle. Like, I don’t even care about the two points, absolutely. And Frederic takes a two-game, three-game suspension, don’t care. Wrap your stick around Tkachuk’s neck and rip it off,”

The 28-year-old Tkachuk has played in only 10 games this season following offseason surgery, producing eight points (three goals, five assists) in that time.

It’s hard to disagree with Karius’ take—at some point, there needs to be pushback. If Tkachuk is willing to dish it out, he should be ready to take it once in a while. Edmonton has one more opportunity to do that in 2025–26, barring a third straight matchup in the Stanley Cup Finals.

What could complicate those plans, however, is Tkachuk’s health. Insiders have questioned whether Florida might shut their superstar winger down for the year if their already slim playoff hopes slip even further. If that happens, Edmonton may have to wait even longer for a chance at payback

If he is healthy and in the lineup come mid-March, buckle up—because we could be in for some fireworks between the Oilers and Panthers, with Tkachuk at the center of it all.
