Nikita Zadorov Calls Loss to the Maple Leafs “Embarrassing”

Nikita Zadorov wasn’t happy about his Boston Bruins losing to the rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

You could say neither team got the result they wanted in Tuesday night’s rivalry game between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Bruins came up empty-handed in a massive game on home ice in the midst of the wild Eastern Conference playoff race, while the Maple Leafs picked up two points, distancing themselves from the bottom five of the league standings.

In one way, Toronto winning helps Boston potentially secure a high first-round pick in the upcoming draft, but that was secondary to what really mattered. Losing to a struggling Maple Leafs team with little to play for was unacceptable for a Bruins squad with everything on the line, and Nikita Zadorov didn’t sugarcoat it postgame, calling it an embarrassing loss.

Zadorov said:

“Well, we were just flat. Yeah, we were just flat. I mean, didn’t have emotions against the Toronto Maple Leafs; that’s on us for sure. Gotta be better than that. It’s important points for us at home, and to drop it like this, it’s embarrassing,”

The 30-year-old Zadorov has had a solid season for Boston, with 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) and 167 hits while sporting a +19 rating across 70 games played.

To make matters worse for Zadorov, it was his five-minute major penalty for boarding John Tavares late in the second period that swung momentum in Toronto’s favor. Max Domi capitalized on the man advantage, giving the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead heading into the third period—and they didn’t look back from there.

Zadorov’s size and physicality are what make him valuable, but at times he can cross the line—and unfortunately for the Bruins, that happened on Tuesday night.

Boston and Toronto won’t meet again until 2026-27, and while Easton Cowan and Dakota Joshua pushed back against Zadorov in this game, you can expect the Maple Leafs to remember his hit on Tavares—and the one on captain Auston Matthews earlier this season—along with his postgame comments the next time they match up
